The process of prefabrication has become integral to the garage and carport industry, with most stand alone modern garages made from steel and bought to site already made. Prefabricated garages are also known as pre-fab concrete garages (Beton Fertiggaragen) , a term that is used to refer to any type of garage that is not manufactured on its final site.
Prefabrication is the act of making and assembling components in a factory setting, and then transporting these components to the final construction site. In terms of garage design and manufacture, there are many advantages associated with prefabrication, including lower costs, faster installation, and basically a more efficient process of construction. While the act of prefabrication is used in the creation of many machines and products, the humble domestic garage is probably one of the most obvious examples that is seen everyday.

The most widely used form of prefabrication is within the building industry, where concrete and steel sections are often bought together on site. This process is similar in many ways to putting a jigsaw together, although there are of course blueprints and plans that must be followed. Many of the advantages of prefabrication are associated with the cost of manufacture, with engineering time shaved due to economies of scale. Because most home garage structures are similar to each other in terms of their design, the separate sections can all be made together in order to save money and time. Once all of the components are constructed and ready to go, they are transported to their final location.

When prefabricated components have been transported to site, they then have to be assembled into the final structure. For prefab garages, this process is generally quite simple, with different sizes of steel walls assembled on top of a concrete base. The concrete that is normally used to stabilise home garages is not prefabricated, as it has to be poured on site in the final ground conditions. However, once this concrete base is put in place, the walls and floor structure can be installed. While many prefab garages are different in terms of their final style and design features, the basic principles of prefabrication remain the same.
